In today’s economy, a high school diploma just isn’t enough. Students have to reach higher, which is why we’re working to rally the country to once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.
In January 2019, Reach Higher joined Common App, a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to access, equity, and integrity in the college admissions process.
Everywhere you turn, people talk about whether going to college is worth it, from dinner tables to TV shows to politicians across the country. Current data, though, from the Georgetown University Center on Education and Workforce suggests that in less than a decade, 72% of jobs will require some training after high school, and 42% will require a college degree. According to an internal analysis of Common App data from the 2016-2017 season, only 48% of Common App’s first-generation and low-income applicants earned a Bachelor’s degree within six years, compared to 78% of their continuing-generation and higher-income peers. We know we have to do better, including ensuring that first-generation students and those from low- and middle-income families are set up for success from the moment they start thinking about what’s next to the day they arrive on campus.
