Thank you for your interest in the Reach Higher Initiative Internship. Reach Higher, an initiative started by former First Lady Michelle Obama during her time in the White House, is an effort to inspire every student in America to take charge of his or her future by completing education past high school, whether at a professional training program, a community college, or a four-year college or university. Reach Higher seeks to help every student navigate the college-going process by: (1) celebrating student success; (2) raising awareness about effective college access tools and resources; (3) using a student-centered approach that meets students where they are; and (4) enhancing student support systems by building the capacity of the school counseling profession. In 2015, Reach Higher launched Better Make Room, its student-facing campaign designed to reach students where they are through social media and other new media platforms. Reach Higher is housed at Civic Nation, a nonprofit that uses organizing, engagement, and public awareness to address some of our nation’s most pressing challenges. We work with public and private partners to build tools and campaigns that turn great ideas into action. The Reach Higher intern will work collaboratively with and report to members of the Reach Higher team. S/he will support the team and work on various tasks. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducting research on education policy and trends
  • Drafting social media content and management
  • Drafting and editing memos, talking points, and presentations
  • Assisting with event and campaign management and execution
  • Scheduling meetings and calls
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Be able to use Excel/Google Sheets and have good spreadsheet management skills
  • Display strong attention to detail
  • Be a self-starter, entrepreneurial, and driven to take the initiative and complete tasks on deadline
  • Be able to work as a member of a collaborative team
  • Be able to use social media effectively. (Graphic design skills is a plus)
  • Have a good sense of humor (a plus)

In addition to completing the Reach Higher Internship Application, please submit a cover letter, resume, and a writing sample via email to bettermakeroom@civicnation.org using the subject line Reach Higher Spring/Summer/Fall Internship (indicating the appropriate time frame). Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Incomplete application packages will not be reviewed.
