Beating the Odds
This past June, we celebrated our fifth Beating the Odds with 35 first-generation, college-bound freshmen at Twitter’s DC Headquarters. The students started their day by hearing from current first-generation college students. Afterwards, they heard some powerful words of advice from Mrs. Obama, La La Anthony, Daveed Diggs, Dan Porterfield, Ryan Liu, and Elaine Welteroth.
Mrs. Obama gave this important advice to the first-generation college-bound students: “Ask for help; early and often ask for help. If you’re sitting in a lecture or in a class and you feel like you’re lost, don’t wait until the end of the semester; go right away.” The day ended with a panel and workshop by students who interned at Handshake, the college-to-career network for college students that helps them find a great job and build a career.
